A FEW THINGS ABOUT NEW BABIES 1) FIRST AND FOREMOST!!!! DO NOT TAKE YOUR PUPPY TO A PET STORE, FLEA MARKET, PUBLIC PARK OR ANYWHERE THAT THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A SICK ANIMAL! YOUR PUPPY HAS ONLY HAD ONE SET OF SHOTS AGAINST PARVO AND PET STORES ETC ARE FULL OF PUPPIES THAT JUST CAME FROM THE FLEA MARKET AND COULD BE SICK AND JUST NOT SHOWING SYMPTOMS YET! THE PUPPIES HAVE NEVER BEEN AWAY FROM OUR HOME EXCEPT TO OUR VET AND BACK FOR SHOTS SO THERE HAS BEEN ZERO CHANCE THAT IT HAS BEEN AROUND AN ANIMAL WITH PARVO! PARVO IS NOTHING TO PLAY AROUND WITH AND IT IS NOT WORTH THE RISK JUST TO SHOW OFF YOUR PUP! THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF TIME FOR THAT AFTER HE/SHE HAS HAD ALL 4 SETS OF PUPPY SHOTS! 2) AT THE TIME YOU PICK UP YOUR NEW BABY, THE ONLY VOICES THEY ARE USED TO ARE THE ONES IN OUR HOUSE. PLEASE EXPECT THEM TO BE A LITTLE NERVOUS THE 1 ST FEW DAYS IN YOUR HOME. KEEP IN MIND THAT THEY ARE LEAVING THEIR MOM, THEIR SIBLINGS AND THE ONLY HUMANS THEY ARE USED TO HEARING ALL THEIR LIVES. IT WILL ONLY TAKE A FEW DAYS BUT THEY WILL ADJUST FAIRLY QUICKLY TO THE CHANGE IN SURROUNDING. 3) WHILE THE PUPPIES HAVE BEEN IN OUR CARE THEY WILL BE GIVEN FREE ACCESS 24/7 TO FOOD AND WATER UNTIL 7 WEEKS OF AGE. AT THAT TIME, WE WILL PUT THEM ON A 3 TIMES A DAY SCHEDULE WHICH IS TYPICALLY 8AM, 1 PM AND 6 PM. WHILE WE DO STILL PUT A TAD OF WARM WATER IN THEIR FOOD, THEY ARE GETTING PLENTY OF TEETH IN AND NEED TO CHEW SO WATER MAY OR MAY NOT BE NECESSARY WHEN YOU TAKE THEM HOME. IF YOUR BABY IS NOT EATING VERY WELL, A LITTLE WARM WATER SHOULD HELP THAT. THINGS ARE CHANGING FAST FOR THEM SO IN ORDER TO MINIMIZE SOME STRESS, WE RECOMMEND JUST A TEASPOON OR SO OF COTTAGE CHEESE OR CANNED PUMKIN (NOT PIE FILLING) ONCE A DAY TO HELP KEEP THEIR ENZYMES IN CHECK AND TO MINIMIZE THEIR TUMMIES GETTING UPSET. FOLLOW THE FEEDING CHART ON THE BAG OF PUPPY FOOD. WHEN IT’S TIME TO EAT, LEAVE THE FOOD DOWN FOR NO MORE THAN 20-30 MINUTES SO THAT THEY LEARN TO EAT AND NOT PLAY DURING THAT TIME. ONCE THEY REALIZE YOU ARE GOING TO TAKE IT AWAY, THEY WILL MAKE SURE TO EAT WHEN YOU WANT THEM TO *AS A GENERAL RULE, I DON’T LIKE TO FEED ANY OF MY SCHNAUZERS AFTER 6 PM JUST TO MINIMIZE ACCIDENTS OVERNIGHT. 4) AT THIS AGE, PUPPIES STILL SLEEP A LOT. IN ORDER TO HELP WITH CRATE TRAINING & HOUSE BREAKING, WE RECOMMEND THAT THE BABY BE TAKEN OUT EVERY 3 HOURS IF POSSIBLE DURING THE DAY. I AM NOT MUCH OF A NIGHT PERSON SO I HAVE NEWSPAPER OR PEE PAD DOWN FOR THEM TO GO POTTY WHEN THEY WAKE UP DURING THE NIGHT. JUST FOLD A SMALL PIECE AND PUT IN THEIR CRATE (FRONT OR BACK) SO THEY HAVE SOMEWHERE TO GO IF THEY WAKE UP AND YOU ARE ASLEEP. PUPPIES WILL HAVE ACCIDENTS BECAUSE THEY ARE PUPPIES! LETTING THEM POTTY ON PAPER WILL NOT RUIN CRATE TRAINING AND HOUSE BREAKING. PUPPIES TEND TO POTTY WITHIN 5-10 MINUTES OF WAKING FROM A NAP SO BE SURE TO TAKE THEM OUT ASAP WHEN THEY WAKE FROM NAPS. BRING THEM IN, PLAY FOR AN HOUR OR SO AND TAKE THEM RIGHT BACK OUT. THEN PUT THEM DOWN FOR A NAP. AND OVER AND OVER….. SCHNAUZERS ARE VERY SMART AND WILL FIGURE OUT THAT THEY ARE TO POTTY OUTSIDE. JUST DON’T LOSE PATIENCE WITH THEM. ALSO NOTE THAT, IF YOU ARE CRATE TRAINING, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOUR PUPPY OUT OF THE CRATE WHILE IT IS CRYING (UNLESS THEY CLEARLY ARE DOING SO BECAUSE THEY NEED TO POTTY!). TAKING THEM OUT FOR SIMPLY CRYING WILL TEACH THEM THAT CRYING GETS THEM OUT AND THEY WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT. TO CALM THEM DOWN FROM CRYING TRY COVERING THE CRATE WITH A BLANKET UNTIL THEY SETTLE DOWN. 5) CHEWING WILL BE VERY IMPORTANT WHEN THE BABY COMES HOME. CUTTING NEW TEETH IS RELIEVED BY CHEWING ON SOMETHING. PLEASE KEEP SOMETHING CLOSE BY AT ALL TIMES FOR THE BABY TO CHEW. IF HE/SHE DECIDES TO CHEW ON YOU, SIMPLY SAY “NO” AND REPLACE YOUR FINGERS, TOES OR WHATEVER WITH A NICE STURDY CHEW TOY! THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN IN THE HOUSE. PUPPIES LOVE TO CHASE AND NIP. IF YOUR KIDS ARE GETTING NIPPED, IT MAY CAUSE THEM TO NOT LIKE PUPPIES SO MUCH! TEACH THE KIDS RIGHT AWAY THAT LETTING THE NEW PUPPY CHEW ON THEIR FINGERS AND TOES MAY BE CUTE AT FIRST BUT IT WILL NOT BE CUTE VERY LONG. EVERYONE IN THE HOUSE NEEDS TO KNOW RIGHT FROM THE START THAT CHEWING IS FOR TOYS ONLY, NOT BODY PARTS. TEACH THE KIDS TO SAY “NO” AND REPLACE WITH A TOY AS WELL. 6) A GOOD RULE TO HELP YOUR NEW PUP GET ACCUSTOMED TO KNOWING WHO IS IN CHARGE BETWEEN YOU AND THEM, I RECOMMEND LAYING THE BABY ON HIS/HER BACK IN YOUR LAP SEVERAL TIMES A DAY. THIS WILL SHOW THAT YOU HAVE CONTROL. WHILE ON THEIR BACK, RUB THEIR PAWS & EARS TO HELP GET THEM ACCUSTOMED TO NAILS BEING CLIPPED AND EARS BEING CLEANED. THIS IS ALSO A GOOD TIME TO BRUSH YOUR BABY. IF YOU START AT A YOUNG AGE WITH THIS, IT SHOULD HELP WHEN THE TIME COMES TO GROOM. ALTHOUGH THIS CAN HELP, SOME PETS JUST ABSOLUTLEY HATE THEIR NAILS TRIMMED. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS. I DO NOT CLAIM TO KNOW EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW. IF I DON’T KNOW AN ANSWER TO SOMETHING I WILL TELL YOU EXACTLY THAT. WHAT I DO KNOW IS ALL FROM EXPERIENCE AND OWNING SCHNAUZERS MYSELF SINCE 1999. |
